Protected Areas

The Sefton Coast Partnership brings together landowners, statutory agencies, key sector and interest groups to develop a common vision for the protection and enhancement of the Sefton Coast.

Supported by a network of active volunteers, all these organisations work as a team to make Sefton's natural coast and countryside better and safer for both people and wildlife.

Our coast has been given many protective designations with many sections designated as a EU Special Protection Area (SPA's) under the Birds Directive, or as a EU proposed Special Area of Conservation (pSAC) under the Habitats Directive.

Together these designations identify Sefton's Natural Coast as a 'Natura 2000' site and part of a wider network of important European wildlife sites.

Much of the coast is also designated as a UK Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and as a 'Ramsar Site' under the 1970's international convention of the same name, which aims to protect important wetland sites and migrating shorebirds.
