Home / Guide to the resort
Eighteen miles north of Liverpool is Southport, 'England's Classic Resort', where you will find glorious sandy beaches, panoramic seafront and a Victorian pier. Described as sophisticated, cosmopolitan and vibrant, Southport is the perfect place to enjoy a traditional British seaside break, but with all the modern amenities you would expect.
First port of call for many visitors is Southport's famous pier, the oldest surviving iron pier in the UK and the longest overland pier in the country. Adjacent is Marine Lake, the largest man-made leisure lake in the U.K, and Marine Way Bridge. The lake boasts various attractions such as the Miniature Railway Village and Southport Belle Mississippi style paddleboat. Another exciting attraction is the new all weather water park Splash World with high speed water slides. Nearby is the largest area of unspoilt Dunes and pinewoods in the UK where you will find one of the few remaining red squirrel colonies.
Southport's Lord Street is famous for its shopping. The leafy boulevard with its glass-canopied shops and stunning Wayfarers Arcade, make it one of the Northwest's leading shopping destinations.
With Royal Birkdale Hosting The Open Championship in July 2008, and 15 top courses within a 30 minutes drive from the town centre, Southport justifiably claims to be England's Golfing Capital.
Southport is also one of the country's leading event destinations with an annual fun-packed programme staging some of the UK's largest and most varied events, including the Southport International Jazz Festival, Summer Classics ("Music in the Park"), Southport Flower Show and the Southport Airshow and Military Display.
