Time for the great outdoors

Southport is a excellent canvas if you love the great outdoors. The largest area of wild dunes left in Britain run along the coast and are home to plenty of wildlife.

May be you'll spot one of the elusive Natterjack Toads which make the dunes their home, or the endearing Red Squirrels as they scurry through the trees in the coastal pinewoods.

Spot one of the 300 different bird species recorded at Marshside bird watching area, or see the wildfowl on the flooded marshes in the winter.

Nearby Martin Mere Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust is a haven for wintering waterfowl and is home to a rare wildfowl collection. And in the February half term you can join in on their puddle jumping competition - that's what wellies were made for!

Get your bikes out and try one of the cycle routes through Southport or along the coast. Explore the different areas and try to spot some of the local flora and fauna - butterflies, Asparagus, Lapwings and swans to name just a few!

Love the beach in the summer? There are so many great beaches along the Southport and Sefton coast. Crosby beach where you can see the Anthony Gormley statues staring out to sea, Formby beach, which is a naturally beautiful beach, Ainsdale beach for water based sports and Southport beach for the pier and expansive views. All of these beaches will have families on the hottest days and walkers wrapped up on the coldest of days.

Farm life is never too far away from Southport either and a short drive means the kids can be feeding animals on a working farm in either Windmill Animal Farm or Farmer Teds. And once the summer comes to an end Farmer Teds gets ready for the nationally acclaimed Farmageddon Halloween event.

Blow the cobwebs away on Southport pier, the oldest iron pier in the UK. The views will take your breath away once you reach the Pavilion at the end. And let's not forget the parks in and around Southport, they are a haven of tranquility and the perfect setting for the whole family to enjoy some quality time.

The outdoor life goes beyond Southport and the coast is a tranquil place to stay. Dunes that go one forever, miles and miles of coast. This is the time to enjoy the British landscape, no matter what the weather.
