5 ways to enjoy the Southport Festival

Over three days, Southport bursts into life with a huge programme of art and culture splashed throughout its venues and open spaces with the Southport Festival.

Looking for things to do? Memories are waiting to be made around every corner.

Interactive street drawing, community dance performances and superb theatre create unforgettable experiences.

Music, dance performances and laughter fill the street.

As music pours from venues throughout the town centre, with jazz orchestras, flamenco guitar, folk, jive and pop punk bands just some of the excellent free performances you can expect.

Look out this year for stunning family street theatre, big name soul singers and superb dance performance throughout.

We have put together 5 things not to be missed at this years Southport Festival.

Catch one of our three iconic headliners

The festival has not one but two superb headliners for 2019 – 90’s soul, dance and pop legend Heather Small and the iconic Soul ll Soul

As Part of M People, Heather had hits such as Moving On Up, One Night In Heaven and Search For The Hero.  Heather became one of the seminal British voices of the 1990s, with the band winning the Best British Dance Act Award at the Brits in 1999.

Iconic British band Soul II Soul will pay tribute to their legendary debut album, Club Classics Vol 1. With huge hits including ‘Keep On Movin’ (which sold over a million copies in the US alone) and the UK number one single ‘Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)’, the double Grammy Award winning and five-time Brit Award nominated band progressed from being one of the leaders of the 1980’s warehouse scene to pioneering British black music around the world

Elkie Brooks is arguably one of Britain’s greatest and most successful female singer songwriters. Join her at The Waterfront for a night of sublime vocals.

Let all the family enjoy superb street theatre

Catch free performance the children will love all around the town.

Fabulariums Tale of Reynard the Fox follows the woodlands most infamous scoundrel who prides himself on being the trickster of the forest. This engaging outdoor theatre for family audiences of all ages, using The Fabularium’s unique aesthetic, strong imagery and all performed upon their traditional wooden cart. It will feature storytelling, puppetry, original live music and The Fabularium’s bespoke animal headpieces.

The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party is a crazy, fun filled, mad cap show … Join Alice and The Mad Hatter in the magical world down the rabbit hole and though the looking glass! They invite you all to their fantabulous, tremendous tea party to join in all the fun. Expect games and sing-a-longs and of course lashings of tea! It’s an event not to be missed! Full of audience participation, laughter … and cake, eaten the Mad Hatter’s way!

3. Get the whole family creating

Make magical memories and let every generation unleash their creativity with one of our free art demos and have a go sessions.

Urban Canvas will be painting the town.  Using a 500 year old chalking technique, everybody gets the chance to take part in creating this magical garden piece, even those just passing by won’t be able to resist stopping to help for a moment, or popping back to see how things are going.

Younger art lovers will love the Mermaid Garden creative zone with all manner of interactive art stations and magical story telling.   Older creators can learn to weave, knit, paint or new photographic skills in anyone of several free art workshops.

Laugh out loud

There are big laughs for little people with our two kids comedy shows in The Atkinson on the Saturday whilst grown ups have a huge night of laughs Friday with The Waterfront’s comedy night.

Funded and resourced by Southport BID and Sefton Council the festival is now in its fourth year, having been emerged from the annual Arts Trail and Jazz Festival before it.
