Time to take in some culture
A stunning 19th century building, a multi-art form venue, beautiful décor and the history of Sefton’s Coast, The Atkinson is the home for music, theatre, art, poetry, literature and history.
The museum tells the story of 10,000 years of Sefton’s Coast with the Between Land and Sea exhibition. It explores how Sefton links to the rest of the world through its history and how it is a popular tourist destination today.
Open all year with a varied seasonal programme, The Atkinson bring the very best arts and culture to Southport. The Goodison Egyptology Collection in the gallery is an excellent way to see how life was for the Egyptians.
The Southport Little Theatre is the home for the local amateur dramatics society. The venue has live productions on throughout the year and during the Southport Festival you can take a tour of the backstage and dressing rooms.
For something a little bit quirkier, the British Lawnmower Museum is a truly unique experience. Attracting national press interest on a regular basis this is the only museum of its kind in the world, housing over 200 restored exhibits.
As one visitor reviewed on Trip Advisor “Something completely different, even if you're not into lawnmowers!”
Southport Theatre has big names such as Jimmy Carr, Ken Dodd and Russell Brand. The favourite children’s travelling TV shows such as Mr Bloom from CBeebies. And plenty of tribute shows throughout the year.
The Waterfront Arts Project is an artist run community gallery space which hosts seasonal exhibitions of local artists. Located on the promenade, this light and bright space makes a visit welcoming and inspiring.
In May the Southport Festival brings a mix of art and culture to the streets of Southport. Over three days Southport is transformed with music across venues, street art, poets, literature readings and comedy. The free festival makes sure that all of the family can take part and engages local talent in a festival for you.
From festivals, theatres and museums, day time or night time, when you visit Southport you and the family can soak up as much culture to make your time your experience.
