Surrounding Southport is West Lancashire – a nature lovers dream, the landscape is mainly countryside and there are plenty of things to do.

Grab the bikes or hire them at the Eco Visitor Centre and take off for the day on one of the cycling routes - explore the nature that nestles amongst the brambles and countryside.

Take the family to the National Trust's Rufford Old Hall, a beautiful Tudor building surrounded by Edwardian and Victorian Gardens. And if hunger takes over visit their Victorian Tearooms.

Martin Mere Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust isn't too far away for a visit when staying at Southport, a haven of wilderness where you can get really close to the wetland wildlife.

Also close by is Windmill Animal Farm where the kids can meet the farm animals and their babies, ride on tractors, feed lambs, have fun in the play barn and fill their tummies in the cafe.

Farmer Ted's, a family run farm which has become more popular over the years. As well as a big animal farm they host annual events such as Farmageddon, Farmer Christmas and a Super Hero’s and Perfect Princesses Day – this is one the littles ones will love as dressing up is part of the fun!

Ormskirk is a market town only 9 miles away from Southport. Steeped in history this quaint town is worth a visit, especially on market day, each Tuesday and Saturday, with stalls throughout the town.

There is a small museum in the indoor market which shows the history of the town with artefacts and donated items of interest.

If you are looking for a bit of countryside by the coast, open spaces to walk and cycle or a mooch around a market- it is all at your fingertips!
