About
Managed by Sefton Coast and Countryside Service, this site is characterised by a high mobile dune ridge with smaller embryo dunes next to the expansive and largely undisturbed beach. To the rear, the Natural dunes have been altered by sand extraction which did not cease until the mid 1970s. An immense blow-out, one of the largest in the UK, is an impressive feature. Know locally as 'Devil's Hole', the lowest point has developed into wet slack, whilst the moving is now within the pine canopy.
Rabbits are important in keeping the vegetation short and retaining the openness of the area. Lucky visitors may well spot Foxes, Stoats and Weasels going about their business.
Ravenmeols has an interesting array of man-made features too, including old military buildings and the remains of a failed attempt to develop a rival resort to Southport in the late 19th century.
