About

A celebration of our townscape heritage in art!

We hope our Built on Sand – 200 years of Southport’s changing street scene exhibition has inspired you to look more closely at Southport’s townscape – its streets, buildings and how they are used. This follow-up exhibition, Southport’s Streets – Seen by You!, shows artwork that reflects the built heritage of the town. It’s a great way to really appreciate Southport’s eclectic architecture.

All artwork has been submitted by local artists in collaboration with Southport Townscape Heritage Project.

Sales commission from this exhibition supports the activities of The Atkinson as the cultural hub for Southport and wider Sefton. Work from the exhibition can be purchased from the Shop on the Ground Floor.

Works over £100 can be purchased through the Own Art scheme in ten monthly instalments with no additional fees or interest. See staff in the shop to book an appointment or email jemma.tynan@sefton.gov.uk

Thornton College

This collection of collage work is by the students at Thornton College, a further education provision for young people with additional needs.

Southport is a town we love to visit, with its rich, varied architecture and environment. It is an obvious source of inspiration for our art project, which we have entitled “Southport Reimagined”.

We hope you enjoy the students’ work, which tries to capture the magic, heritage, and colour of our favourite seaside town.

Michael Swift

Michael is the founder and leader of Stepping Stones, a social activity group for people who may be isolated, have mental health issues or a disability. They meet at the Temperance Institute – the subject of his painting – which is still run by Southport Temperance Society for its original purpose.
