With the UK's highest concentration of championship links courses, golf in Southport is of the higest standard and understandably regarded as ‘England's Golfing Capital’.
Royal Birkdale in Southport regularly hosts the The Open Championship with the last one being in July 2008 and is again to host it in 2017.
The club was the venue for the Seniors Open in 2013 and for the Womens Open in 2005, 2010 & most recently in 2014.
But Southport's reputation for being England's Golfing Capital is not just based on Royal Birkdale it boasts several more championship courses within 15 minutes drive of the town centre and another only half an hour away.
Hillside, Formby, Hesketh, Southport & Ainsdale, Formby Hall and West Lancashire Golf Clubs are all superb courses providing a challenge to the most accomplished golfer.
With plenty of accommodation in and around Southport, there's no excuse not to stay and try several of them in one visit.
Southport is also ideally situated for Royal Liverpool Golf Club - host of the 2014 British Open Championship and Royal Lytham which hosted it in 2012.
