Southport is home to the UK's highest concentration of championship links courses and is widely regarded as ‘England's Golfing Capital’.
Royal Birkdale in Southport regularly hosts the The Open Championship with the last one being in July 2008. The club is the venue for the Seniors Open Golf on 25th to 28th July 2013, watch the preview video. Royal Birkdale has also been the venue for the Womens Open in both 2005 and 2010.
But Southport's reputation for being England's Golfing Capital is not just based on Royal Birkdale it boasts several more championship courses within 15 minutes drive from the town centre and a sixth only half an hour away.
Hillside, Formby, Hesketh, Southport & Ainsdale, Formby Hall, Formby Ladies and West Lancashire Golf Clubs are all superb courses providing a challenge to the most accomplished golfer. And with plenty of accommodation in and around Southport, there's no excuse not to stay and try several of them in one visit.
Southport is also ideally situated for Royal Liverpool Golf Club - host of the 2014 British Open Championship. If you are planning to visit The Open why not consider Southport as your base and take in one or more of the courses while you are here!
