Birkdale is a stones throw from Southport by car, train or on foot. At the heart of Birkdale is Birkdale Village, a hub of restaurants, bars and independent shops including Southport's famous Birkdale Cheese Co, an establishment in the village for over 40 years and an AA 2 Rosette awarded French bistro, Bistrot Vérité.
Further afield, and regularly in the spotlight, Royal Birkdale Golf Club, home of the Open Championship, last played in 2017. This golf course has the world watching when the Open Championship is there and it proudly shows off the coastline as it sits amongst the sand hills of Birkdale.
Birkdale is also home to the Southport and Birkdale Cricket Club which hosts county level matches each year. The famous, triple Grand National winner Red Rum was also stabled in Birkdale and trained by Ginger McCain on Southport beach.
If you like the village feel, the independent shops and restaurants and alfresco dining close to the coast, then Birkdale is accessible and has plenty of places to stay. If you prefer to be in the heart of Southport then Birkdale Village is definitely one to add to your list!
