In the early 1800s Southport was growing as a popular leisure resort for those with disposable income. Landowners and railway companies competed to create world class golf courses along Southport’s coastline, laying the foundations for one of England’s most celebrated golfing destinations. Today, courses stretch across more than a quarter of Sefton’s dramatic sand dune system.
This proud legacy continues at Royal Birkdale, host of The Open Championship an impressive 10 times, with the 11th tournament set to return in July 2026.
