Visitors to the north-west looking for something a little different should add the seaside town of Southport to their bucket-list of summer fun.

Tourists often head to the metropolitan hubs of Liverpool or Manchester but Southport and the beautiful coastline surrounding it has plenty to offer both locals and those travelling from further afield. Now school is out until September, there’s a wealth of things to do, from must-attend events to attractions and much more that you simply won’t find anywhere else.

Lovers of the great outdoors will jump at the chance to lose themselves in the beautiful landscapes in and around the town, with different nature trails offering family adventures along the coast and beaches.

The 22-mile stretch of coastline is a great place to soak up nature while there are green spaces dotted across the town itself to help you unwind. King’s Gardens on the promenade is the perfect place for a family picnic on a sunny day while it has a
brilliant play area for the little ones to enjoy.

Many of Southport’s best attractions are family-focused with Southport Pleasureland a highlight. The park features different activities to cater for thrill-seekers of all ages. From flying chairs and log flumes to rides for younger visitors, there’s entertainment and events throughout the year with exciting attractions being added. The latest activities include Viking Golf, a 18-hole, viking-themed experience designed for players of all ages. Steampunk Bay is billed as the only steampunk-themed park adventure in the UK and marries Victorian style with science fiction for a uniquely fun day out.

Southport Marine Lake is nearby and offers numerous relaxing experiences for visitors to enjoy with leisurely walks and boating activities. The promenade is a great spot to wile away a sunny afternoon while the lake itself often hosts family-friendly events and activities. On its perimeter, there are other attractions to enjoy too including the Model Railway Village and Silcock’s Funland with its amusements and arcades.

For curious culture vultures, The Atkinson Museum offers an array of attractions, from the art gallery to the Egyptology Museum and its collection of artefacts taking visitors back to ancient times. Southport’s has already hosted some fantastic events this year including the Southport Air Show and will see more this summer including the Southport Flower Show which is being opened by local TV and Radio Personality, Adele Roberts. Running from 15th-18th August, this year marks its 100th anniversary with plenty of celebrities appearing including entrepreneur Nisha Katona MBE and stars from Strictly Come Dancing. Live performances, floral displays and family entertainment are all part of the programme with under-16s going free.
