Cycling is fast becoming a fun and popular way to get around. Here in Sefton we’re blessed with some fantastic cycling routes that cover everything from coast to countryside, but sometimes setting off on your own to explore can be a bit daunting. That’s where Liverpool Cycle Tours come in. With a variety of options available – including Beatles cycle tours and Liverpool North Coast cycle tours – the hard part will be choosing which one to do first!

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’ve spent the last 21 years working as a secondary school teacher teaching Design & Technology. I have always loved cycling, travelling and have been a musician for many years. The Beatles and Liverpool history really interest me too. I’m also a keen environmentalist and as a tree-hugger I think we all have a duty to protect our local and global environments and try to live as harmoniously as possible with the Earth. I wanted to offer visitors to the Liverpool city region an alternative to all the taxi / bus / coach tours of Liverpool and try and give them something different and a bit more personal. 4 May 2021 saw us celebrate our 10th anniversary. A lot of blood, sweet, tears and money has been poured into this business!

What do you love most about what you do?

Meeting really interesting people from all around the world and sharing my love of this amazing city and its history!

What was your average day like pre-COVID?

Busy! 2019 was our best year to date and we had a great team all working closely together to offer our guests the best experience they could have. Our tours ran from 9.30am until 10pm and we always seemed to be busy but loving it too!

How did you have to adapt the business during COVID-19?

We had to make some drastic changes just to try and stay in business. At the end of 2019 we had 56 bicycles, including 29 brand news ones of which 12 were top of the range electric bicycles. By the spring of 2020 our fleet had been reduced down to 23. We had to sell whatever we could afford to sell to help pay the bills. We also reduced the amount of available tours by half so we could run on reduced staffing. For most of 2020 it was always just a case of trying to stay one step ahead of the bills.

Your Liverpool North Coast Cycle Tour can be tailored to requirements, and even include a visit to Southport – what do you love most about the town?

Southport has always been a special place for us and reminds us of family holidays and fun fairs and ice cream! The sea front is particularly special and is great for cycling. We’ve considered expanding our business to include a franchise in Southport, and even Blackpool, as cycling is becoming more and more popular.

Being a tour guide you must be asked a lot of questions…

Once doing a north coast tour by the Antony Gormley Statues, Another Place, a lady asked about the wind turbines, “so if they need electricity to turn what is the point of them?” I did try to explain that the wind is turning the blades and THAT is producing the electricity, but she didn’t understand….
